The New Year sees Carl Magnay enter a fresh 12 months as a manager for the first time in his career.<\/h1>\n

After transitioning from a playing role to a coaching one in 2023, before departing Tyneside for MK Dons \u2013 and then Carlisle United \u2013 in the summer, Magnay returned home in an entirely new role as Gateshead Football Club\u2019s head honcho in October.<\/p>\n

The trials and tribulations of management have been a learning curve, by Magnay\u2019s own admission, but The Heed remain firmly on course to challenge for potential promotion at the season\u2019s midway point.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been a big risk for me to do this,\u201d <\/em>said Magnay.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m giving my absolute all to be successful for the club, and people need to know that, but also that I\u2019m still learning a lot.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a young manager and I\u2019m going to make mistakes – I\u2019ve been honest that I have made mistakes already.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSome of my mates who recommended that I take the job told me that I\u2019d learn so quickly, and they were right.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really honest and open with my interviews, and the feedback that I give is not only about the players, but about myself as a manager.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAnything the players aren\u2019t doing means I have to look inwards and make sure I\u2019m doing everything I can first and foremost.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe first few games were great, but after that a couple of players were perhaps out of position, and I possibly didn\u2019t know the squad as well as I thought I did.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSince then, it\u2019s been about getting to know the boys\u2019 strengths, putting them in the right places and delivering the right messages.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m in a place at the moment where I\u2019m confident delivering what I want, and the players are understanding that and getting on board with it as well.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI can only see that as a positive, and I\u2019m really looking forward to the second half of the season.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Such is the pressure and expectation of management in professional football though, that it is perhaps easy to forget that football is, at the end of the day, a game to simply be enjoyed.<\/p>\n

That word however, is not quite the one Magnay would use when reflecting on his position.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnjoyment probably isn\u2019t the word, but it\u2019s certainly a position that I\u2019m privileged to be in,\u201d <\/em>he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cI try to enjoy it as much as I can, but there\u2019s so much responsibility that you put on yourself.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m desperate to do well for this club, and the fans – I\u2019m a fan myself as well as a local lad.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhile it\u2019s a nice thing being a manager of a club you\u2019ve got such an affinity with, \u00a0it also brings huge personal pressure more than anything, so enjoyment is probably not how I would describe it.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYou have moments, particularly when you win, but I think it\u2019s more relief than anything.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so conscious of getting this club to where it wants to be, and where the players deserve to be, that the wins are just pure relief.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve learned that when things aren\u2019t going well people are very quick to give their opinions, which is football and you just have to ride with that, so there\u2019s a lot to contend with.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully mistakes will be few and far between, though I can\u2019t guarantee that with the way the game unfolds, but I\u2019m certainly making sure I\u2019m putting everything into the job.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
