Mike Williamson is looking forward to the first derby clash at Gateshead International Stadium in two years on Boxing Day.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Gateshead host Blyth Spartans for the first time since a 3-2 defeat on December 26, 2019 this Sunday with the two sides at opposite ends of the league table.<\/p>\n

The Heed come into the weekend sitting third and two points behind league leaders Brackley Town, while Blyth lie 21st<\/sup> following nine defeats in their last 10.<\/p>\n

Williamson feels the form book will matter little this weekend, saying: \u201cWhen it comes to local derbies form goes out of the window, it\u2019s about who handles the occasion on the day.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlyth are a good team and they\u2019ve got a new manager who is getting his own message across so we\u2019re looking forward to it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWatching the last couple of games, you can definitely see that there\u2019s a structure Blyth are putting into place.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a derby so emotionally everyone will be fired up for it and looking forward to the test and they\u2019ve got a lot of former players of ours as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

The player-manager admits he is relishing Boxing Day\u2019s derby, but is keen to ensure the occasion doesn\u2019t get the better of his side.<\/p>\n

\u201cI fully look forward to derbies, I always have done my whole career.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bigger the game, the more pressure and the more enjoyment but ultimately it\u2019s about being professional.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t get involved in the occasion and we\u2019ve got to prepare like we do for every other game to make sure that we\u2019re mentally and physically ready for a really tough battle.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t had a good result against them in recent years and they\u2019re first and foremost a good team.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith no disrespect to their past teams, they\u2019re probably the strongest they\u2019ve been this season and they\u2019ve got a lot of good players.<\/p>\n

\u201cI say it every week that it\u2019s about how we go about things, and we\u2019ve got to respect what they do, but focus on our game plan firstly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Williamson also offered an update on the squad\u2019s fitness and in particular Greg Olley and Macaulay Langstaff, who missed out on last Saturday\u2019s win over Brackley due to suspension and illness.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreg was suspended and Macaulay wasn\u2019t well so they\u2019ll both be back in on Sunday,\u201d Williamson added.<\/p>\n

\u201cDanny [Greenfield] is still a couple of weeks away and Elliot [Forbes] is a little bit longer, but other than that we\u2019re fit and healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
